Most fiber laser systems create identification by heating the surface of the metal and producing a controlled oxidation layer. This process generates sharp, high-contrast graphics without physically removing significant material.

Although the finished mark looks permanent, it typically penetrates only between 0.0005 and 0.001 inches into the metal.
